Fly to NZ

 It is an early start this morning rising at 4.15am for a pickup by the airport shuttle bus to take us to the airport for our 9.35am flight. The disadvantage of using the shuttle bus is that you often arrive early, however, they also often have a few pick ups along the which they need to allow for. This morning there were only 2 other passengers, who were already on board when the bus arrived at Bayview.

There was no traffic and we got to the airport in record time, arriving at the International terminal in just over 1 hour, which included a drop off of our other passengers at the domestic terminal.

The consequence was that check in was a breeze, as there we few people at the airport at this hour. We were fully processed and inside the departure area with 3 hours to spare before the plane left.

Phil and Luth who are travelling with us were travelling business class, so we didn't see them until we were on the plane. The flight was uneventful, left on time, and arrived 20 minutes early thanks to a strong tailwind.

Peter was at the airport to greet us and transport us to their home in Alexandra where we are staying for the next week. As we hadn't seen Peter and Deirdre for a number of years, there was lots of catching up to do. They have organised a great program of activities for the period we are with them and have a lovely home which is very well set up for receiving visitors.

Alexandra is a very pretty town, not too touristy, but very well served with all of the amenities you need

Soon after arrival we were being spoiled with drinks and snacks on the balcony, followed by a nice dinner.

The travellers were pretty tired, so it was an early night and we have a full program tomorrow.

Our last Day in NZ Driving back to Queenstown from Haast

 Leaving Haast at 8.30 am, we have another 3 hours plus of driving to get us to Queenstown, where we are staying overnight near the airport before catching a 7 am flight home tomorrow. The Haast Pass road is yet another drive with stunning scenery and a bit less hilly that our previous few days as the road mostly follows the valley through which the Haast River Flows. There are a number of scenic stops along the way, three of which feature waterfalls, in the Mount Aspiring National Park. Nelson

 The drive to Nelson today is a relatively short one, only 115 km. Estimated driving time is 1 hr 40 mins, these are rarely correct. It is probably more like 2 hrs. We have been over parts of this road a few times but the only bit we hadn't covered between Blenheim and Havelock is a short stretch of only a few km where all of the cellar doors are located. We called in to take a photo of Cloudy Bay just to prove we had been there. It was a bit early for a tasting. It was very cloudy at Cloudy Bay Cellar Door Vineyards line the road on the way in  You need to look closely but there are bunches of white grapes on these vines We continue on through Havelock with pine plantations lining the hillsides. We go through a bit of a valley where dairying seems to be the go, and then we are back into mountainous terrain, winding our way up and down steep inclines. Timaru to Akaroa

 Checking out of the Baywatch Motor Lodge this morning I am glad we didn't decide to cook a curry last night as I saw this notice above the cooktop. We were gone by 8.30 am and found a nice cafe on the highway going North, called Robert Harris, which looked like it was a franchise, but nevertheless served a great breakfast and had strong support from the local police force. There was a bit of an embarrassing moment when left the cafe to return to the car. I could not open the car with the key pod, tried removing the emergency key and inserting it, still with no luck. All of a sudden I thought, maybe this isn't our car. Sure enough another silver Prius was parked 3 cars away and it responded well to our key. The drive towards Akaroa is pretty uninteresting until you turn off the highway and head towards the coast turning off at Burnham in our case and travelling through Lincoln.
